I will preface this review by saying that I think that Imperial Pilsners are severely underrepresented. I’m a huge fan of pilsners in general, they’re refreshing and light! Clearly I’m not into the adjunct-filled Miller Lite kind, but I definitely think pilsners end up with a bad rap because of those “fake pilsners”. I reviewed the Boulevard Imperial Pilsner a little while back, so when I stumbled upon the Heavy Seas Small Craft Warning Über Pils on the shelf at Total Wine, I absolutely had to try it.

It pours a beautifully clear, medium gold colour into the glass. However, the 1/4 inch head that was produced disappeared pretty damn quick, before I could catch it on film in fact! Even though, it seemed to have a decent amount of carb to my naked eye.

The aroma is of doughy, bready malt followed by pear and apple. There’s also some light grassiness and mild spiciness from the hops. 4 different hops were used for this brew; Saaz (of course), Tettnang, Amarillo and Hersbrucker.

It’s quite malty upfront on the tongue, but it’s backed up by some earthy, floral hop notes with a touch of citrus. The amarillo hops are a little out of place among the Nobles (poor little peasant hops –ha!) so I’m guessing they are what is giving this beer it’s more distinctive floral/citrus hop flavour than a regular pilsner. It definitely tastes lower in alcohol than it is, making this a dangerous FL summer drinker!

The mouthfeel is weird and I’m probably not going to explain it very well; it doesn’t make sense to me, but it is how I describe it ;) It is full-bodied and a little sticky; but it’s still very light feeling. The sticky coating doesn’t linger longer than it should – make sense? Ha :)

All said and done, a first-rate brew, A+. Go and buy some!
