This is going to be a bit of a cheat review – simply because as you can see above, I broke the craft beer drinker’s cardinal rule of pouring into a glass. Frankly, when it is still 85 degrees at 8.30pm, I reserve the right every now and then to use a coozi; no glass. So there.
Brent and I both had rough days yesterday, and by 8pm were starving and dying for a beer. Thank goodness we live within a 2 mile radius of the wonderful downtown Lake Worth, where it is possible to have a beer and a burger without being surrounded by the standard Florida 20-somethings with their popped collars and MGD64s. Case in point – Thursday night on the “Ave” is Bike Night! All kinds of bikers descend on the Ave for beers and dinner – fun! We decided to drop by South Shores Tavern as we hadn’t been there in a long time, and their sandwiches are really good.
We sat down and saw that they finally have some non-macro offerings on the menu; Yay! Had already resigned myself to a glass of wine, so that was happy news! They had run out of the Kona Firerock, so we ordered up a pair of the Kona Wailua Wheat Ales, brewed with passion fruit.
I was pleasantly surprised! Passion fruit (obviously, duh) on the nose, but not overpowering (well, it was from the bottle, but…whatever) a little apple and some grainy malt. There was definitely passion fruit in the taste, as well as a touch of sourness – somewhat Festina Peche-like – some lemony citrus, and some dry, bready malt. The carbonation was really nice, which kept the beer very light, crisp and refreshing.
While not overly complex, this is a really refreshing example of the filtered wheat beer style; I was pretty damn happy with it on a HOT evening, and would definitely try it again!
ABV: 5.4%
IBU: 15
Serving Style: 12oz bottle (no glass, GASP!)

I got to have this beer at the Kona Brewery in Hawaii, and it is even better on draft at the source (duh!) But this is one of my faves from KBC.
